GALLANT Gregory

GALLANT Gregory (SETH)                                                                                            (Nom de plume “Seth.”)

C:\Users\Robert\Documents\CARTOONING ILLUSTRATION ANIMATION\IMAGE OF PERSON\G\GALLANT Gregory, It's A Good Kife If You Don't Weaken, .jpg              Circa 1990’s. It’s A Great Life If You Don’t Weaken.

‘My life as an artist is a life spent in the studio and, for me, the purpose of the studio is not work but play. Not play in the sense of how children play – you cannot recapture that sort of experience as an adult – but play in the form of imaginative exploration. In other words, embracing stray notions and having the confidence to follow those notions down whatever meandering path they lead. Sometimes this process leads to finished works—comic stories or decorative objects. Often it leads nowhere or ends up merely as busy-work – sketchbook drawings or jumbles of notes. Occasionally this ‘busy-work’ ends up being the work itself—the process becoming the point. In some ways my studio life today isn’t all that different from how I operated as a child. The inspirations are much the same—comic books, toys, models—and the materials themselves, too—cardboard, scissors, poster paint and glue. This exhibition documents my life in the studio. The works shown here are the physical artifacts of drifting time spent in solitude. For me, the studio is a refuge, a playroom, a hiding place, a bubble. A tiny, closed world.                                                                                                              Gregory Gallant, from the introduction to Seth: A Life, All Play, an exhibit Gallery of Guelph, Sept. 12 to Dec. 15, 2019.

“I think that if there’s any hope of raising the medium, you have to think of yourself as an artist and the story has to have literary concerns. You’ve really got to try to consciously craft something that has real meaning.”                                  Globe and Mail 11 Sept.1993: C1.

Gallant earns a living as a illustrator for publications such as Saturday Night, Toronto Life and The Washington Post. He remarked to journalist Cathal Kelly, “The comic [Palookaville] doesn’t buy me anything. Well maybe a hamburger.”

He was part of a group which included his two friends Chester Brown and Joe Matt which mined the autobiographical cartoon genre so prevalent in the early 1990’s. “It’s a reaction against what’s always gone on in comics, which is way too much fantasy. So much fantasy that as a sheer reaction to get away from it , you want to [tell] the most real thing [you] knew, which was you own life.” [C1] Although the comic books of these three sold in small quantities per issue (3000 – 7000), they attracted mail from across North America, Europe and Asia.

He was one of the illustrators on Dean Motter’s Mr. X.

Gallant had an idea for a comic he named Palookaville. Oliveros owner of Drawn and Quarterly decided to publish it. Gallant became one of the company’s core artists. Palookaville, is in reality Toronto, and tells slice of life stories based on the artist’s own experiences. The first issue dealt with Gallant being mistaken for a homosexual and beaten up in a Toronto subway station in the mid 1980’s. It has been described as wielding the great emotional power of a good short story.

While the three friends Gallant, Brown and Matt have all exploited the autobiographical vein of cartoon stories to the maximum all three in 1993 were wanting to move away from it into fiction and history.

In 1996 Oliveros and the Drawn and Quarterly artists were featured guests at the Haarlem Comics Festival in the Netherlands in Europe.

He won the 2005 Doug Wright Award Best Book for Clyde Fans Book 1 and the 2010 Doug Wright Best Book Award for George Sprott (1894-1975).

He is the cover illustrator, author of “Landscape” and driving force behind The North Wing Project: all for Canadian Notes and Queries magazine.

Luc Chamberland’s animated feature Seth’s Dominion won an Ottawa International Animation Festive Best Feature Award in 2014.

ALATHA

ALATHA

Created by someone identified as “Samak”, Alatha is an Egyptian ace flying with the Royal Air Force. He has Royal blood with ancestry going back 3000 years to King Ptah. The ghost of Ptah returns to fight the “axis” powers when called upon by “Alatha”. Among the wartime cartoons, this hero stands out as a single departure from heroes who are either Canadian, British or American. Unfortunately, this departure from the usual lasted for only two issues.

GALAXION

GALAXION

Characters:                                                                                                                        Aria Schafer, Darvin Deloren, Vessa Khavis Patricia Kusene, Fusella Mierter, General Scavinia Nelson, Jerran Russell, Zandarin Wilder.

Galaxion evolved out of an elementary school partnership between Tara Jenkins and Wendy Linkous. Wendy inspired by some character sketches by Tara drew what would become the Galaxion characters Fusella, Scavina, Vessa and Patty. Tara responded with Aria, who would become the principal protagonist, Zandarin, Darvin, Alex and Myri. All of these characters existed without a plot. Wendy’s involvement diminished over time and the involvement of others increased. Apparently it was David Tallan who suggested that the story be shifted from a textual to a graphic format, a transition reminiscent of Dave Darrigo and his creation “Wordsmith”. At this juncture the project fell more completely into Tara’s hands as she assumed its illustrative side as well.

Conceived as a novel, “Galaxion” tells the adventures of Aria Schafer and the crew of the spaceship Galaxion as they explore star systems. This is possible because the Galaxion has been outfitted with an experimental propulsive drive called hyperspace jump. The first ship to use it disappeared and the second returned badly damaged. Interestingly, the first story “Prologue” to appear in the market, although written later than issue 1, was about the second ship “Pathfinder” to use the hyperspace jump. This story revolves around General Scavina Nelson, Darvin Deloren and Zandarin Wilder. It appeared as a backup story in Thieves and Kings. The Special Edition 1, is again a separate story and involves Darvin Deloren, Fusella Mierter and Zandarin Wilder at the space academy they attended and establishes the relationships between them.

GAGNIER Jacques

GAGNIER Jacques

“People are always asking how long it takes to draw a cartoon.  They don’t understand it takes a lifetime.”                                                                                      Jacques Gagnier, The Hecklers: 237.

Born 25 July 1917 in Montréal. In 1934 & 1935 he studied at l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1952 he joined the Star [Montréal] as office boy and later moved to the art department where he did occasional spot cartoons. In the early 1960’s he diversified into commercial art, dabbled in film and became involved in the plastic arts while free-lancing for the Gazette [Montréal] He was later hired on at the Gazette as staff artist and cartoonist.

Gregory Gallant (Seth) described him. “He was good. Very good.”

He died December 1978 in Montréal.

The Children’s Guide To … publications below were illustrated by Jacques and written by Leonard L. Knott. They were published between 1949 and 1955 perhaps by Jacques and Leonard themselves. They appear to have been sponsored by various corporations a strategy similar to that of Ganes Productions Ltd. of Toronto. The images below came from Gallant’s collection.
