TRACEY Christopher                                                                                                        (Nom de plume: Wes Tyrell)

Born 2 Feb.1964 in Toronto.

He spent two years studying at the Ontario College of Art and Design, but moved to Europe before completing his degree. While still in school in the mid 1980’s he was lead singer with a country and western band called Wes Tyrell and the Ohio Boys. They played Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern, Rivoli, el Mocambo etc, doing skits and covers of popular songs. He returned to the band after his stint in Europe. From 1988 to 1991 he ran a hotel in Cuba. He returned to Canada and joined his brother’s band Chunk o’ Funk as M.C.

His first cartoons appeared in the Ryersonian since then his work has appeared in The Globe & Mail, Maclean’s Magazine and Literary Review of Canada. He is now syndicated through Aritzans and has a number of commercial clients.

In 2014, Zoomer magazine decided to change to appearance of the full page cartoon feature “Prophet of Zoom” that was then being done by Cuyler Black. They asked Tyrell if he was interested in doing the feature and he accepted. His first effort appeared in Zoomer July/August 2014, and he has done the cartoon since although it has been reduced to accommodate the editorials of the founder of the magazine Moses Znaimer.

At the Montréal convention of the Association of Canadian Editorial Cartoonists he was elected President. At the Havana Convention in 2014, he initiated the “George Townsend Award”. In 2015, as President of the Association of Canadian Editorial Cartoonists, he spearheaded a broadening of the Association’s membership and scope to include all cartooning disciplines “ as many Canadian cartoonists felt there was no home for them” in the association. As well, with the decline of newspapers there is less and less scope for editorial cartooning. Wes Tyrell is not associated with a newspaper and only occasionally draws editorial cartoons. To reflect this change the Association altered its name to Association of Canadian Cartoonists.

TOWN Harold

TOWN Harold

Born: 1924 in Toronto.

A member of Painters 11, he was a pioneer in the Abstract Painting movement in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.

Jean McMaster  became good friends with Jean Townsend, and through this friendship we learn the details about the legend of Harold Town’s involvement with Anglo-American. Jean Townsend who was also working at Anglo-American was going out with Harold Town while both were attending the Ontario College of Art., Townsend suggested to Town that he get a summer job at Anglo-American. He did but his career was quite short as he was fired for “improving” on Captain Marvel.

After an illustrious career as one of Canada’s foremost painters, he died 26 December 1990 of cancer.
