ASKWITH Mark

ASKWITH Mark

Mark, a one time manager of the Silver Snail comic book retail outlet, was principally a television producer who with Daniel Richler created “Prisoners of Gravity” for TVOntario, hosted by Rick Green of The Frantics comedy group. It was a newsmagazine which covered science fiction, fantasy horror and various forms of cartooning. Each program explored a theme. He was last seen as a producer for Space the Canadian science fiction channel.

He was also a part of the Toronto graphic stories scene from about 1974. During that time he scripted and with Dean Motter co-plotted The Prisoner.

In 1988, he was with bp Nichol co-consultant on the film Comic Book Confidential co-designer on the promotional booklet..

He wrote Silencers illustrated by R. G. Taylor. It first appeared in Caliber Presents as a trailer taken from the beginning of Book 2. The four part series followed, then was combined with a prologue added into a novel. This title should not be confused with The Silencers written by Fred Van Lente and illustrated by Steve Ellis which appeared a decade later in 2003 and is essentially a story about a crime family and its enforcers. This novel is about espionage and unlike the film of the same name which was a spoof, this story is deadly serious.

He has written short stories for anthologies including True North, Street Music, Negative Burn and Comics Eye as well as Growing Up With Comics.

Canadiahttps://canadianaci.ca/Encyclopedia/walton-rob/n Comics Cavalcade was an anthology published by Gibeon Steinburg through his company Artwork. The proceeds from this book went to the food banks of Canada. It was inspired by the Marvel and DC publications Heroes For Hope and Heroes Against Hunger, which raised money for African relief. Most of the contributors submitted advertisement posters of their characters, but for those who submitted stories, you will find their submissions recorded under their names.

ARROWHEAD

ARROWHEAD

“Arrowhead” is another creation of Jay Stephens, it first appeared in the anthology, True Patriot: All New Canadian Comic Book Adventures, 2013 and continued in True Patriot: Heroes Of The Great White North, 2014. Chapterhouse Comics attempted to publish a periodical True Patriot Presents featuring “Arrowhead” but only issue 1 was printed and it only reprinted “Arrowhead in ‘Phase One: Test Flight”. It did however continue “Arrowhead” as an on line feature for a while.

Although it is unknown when the “Arrowhead” serial was resurrected in Owl magazine, it is a feature in that magazine at least from January/February 2019 (there is a reference to a previous episode) to the present January/February 2020. It also appeared on the cover of Owl, 44-1, January/February 2019. Jay Stephens continued to be the cartoonist.

The “Arrowhead” serial is interesting for the way Jay ties it to Avro Canada Ltd recalling the achievements of that company, the CF100 fighter aircraft, the C102 the first jet civil airliner to fly in North America and the VZ-9 Avrocar a ground cushion machine and ultimately the CF105, the long remembered Avro Arrow. To these real achievements, Jay attaches his “CGM-2 flight suit”, which is spirited away from Avro by “Fergus Dyjan” on the day the Avro Arrow is cancelled. The story jumps forward to Brampton Ontario, Sept. 13, 2013. Here we meet “Toby Meekis” an aboriginal boy, who on his way home discovers a suitcase containing the “CGM-2” suite. A mentor or friend “Del Dixon” discovers what the suit is about. The suit is tested to great effect but it is also revealed to other more sinister forces, American and it would appear Canadian as well. “Arrowhead in ‘Phase 1.5’: Dawn of the Biodrones.” Opens with an American government assassin attempting to kill “Toby” as he wears the “CGM-2” suite. The American fails and is captured by “Silverbugs” who are connected to the Canadian Forces who as it turns out are no better than the assassin and who also want the suit. Jay then turns to a dark Canadian event the brainwashing experiments done for the CIA at the Allen Memorial Institute in Montreal during the 1960’s. Jay suggests that many of these brainwashed victims are moles scattered in Canadian society. “Del” one of these victims, turns on “Toby”. Where this story would have led to is not known. When we pick up “Arrowhead” in Owl, the tone is very different.

AROUND OUR TOWN

AROUND OUR TOWN

A humorous cartoon strip/panel it first appeared in the Montreal Gazette about 1945 and was still appearing in that newspaper in 1960. Created by Gordie Moore it portrayed everyday events occurring in Montréal.

“His characters are nameless, ordinary people going about the exhausting business of living. In the hustle and bustle of the big town his cynical and sarcastic wit plays the field. Few public utilities, or those toilers who have to deal with crowds of people, escape the barbs of his humour. But it is all in fun. The daily aggregations of crowded street cars, jostling pedestrians, rude motorists, sardine housing, and assorted tribulations only affect Moore’s funny bone. There are few indeed, when the humour of a bad situation is exposed, who cannot exchange a scowl for a reasonable facsimile of a smile.”                                                                                                                              Around Our Town.
