In the late 1970’s, this Ottawa based cartoonist and illustrator moved to Toronto. His cartoon stories appeared in the short-lived periodicals Andromeda and Vortex in addition he drew covers for Vortex Comics’ Mr X series, . He became a set designer on Rock & Rule (1983) produced by Nelvana Ltd. In 1886 he worked on the Care Bear series. He did not leave cartooning and illustration branching out into book covers in 1987 for Isaac Asimov’s Robot City series.
In 1988 Paul and Doug Coupland teamed up to produce a cartoon serial called “The Young And Restless Work Force Following The Baby Boom: Generation X” published in Vista Magazine from 1988 into 1990. It was apparently Doug’s first effort in writing about Generation X for which he became famous. His work appeared in another mainstream periodical Toronto Life in 1994. At the same time he was doing work for DC and Marvel Comics.
His work at Nelvana led to his producing background designs storyboard art for the Warner Brothers Animation series Batman Animated (1992-1995), Batman Beyond (1999-2001)and the film Justice League The New Frontier (2008) .
He has entered the field of graphic books drawing the graphic history adaption (2014) work of Amiiy Shales’ text history of the depression The Forgotten Man and illustrating (2023) George Orwell’s 1984.
