SHANE George

SHANE George

“I remember when I sold my first cartoon to the Calgary Herald in the late 1930’s. They sent me a cheque for one dollar.”                                                                         George Shane, The Hecklers.

Born 1921 in Winnipeg, he always worked as a free lance artist.

He began cartooning before World War 2 for the Herald [Calgary], Free Press [Winnipeg] and other western newspapers. He served in the RCAF and then went to New York to study fine art and illustration. There he did gag cartoons in response to the demand there.

He returned to Canada in the late 1940’s and began working for Saturday Night and The Montrealer, and illustrated a crime magazine. He opened his own commercial art studio. He worked with the Candian Labour Congress and as a result became a cartoonist for various Canadian labour newspapers. He continued to work as a cartoonist and animator for various other companies and organizations in Toronto.

Born 1963 in Montréal.

He was a graduate of Concordia University’s creative writing program.

He organized the company Discovery Publications to publish the fanzine Orion in April 1981.

About 1985, Shainblum organized a second company Matrix Graphic Series which published the periodical New Triumph featuring North Guard (1985-1986). The company’s imprint Matrix Books published Canuck Comics (1986) a price guide of Canadian comics. It ceased operations about 1987.

“Northguard” was written by Mark and illustrated by Gabriel Morrissette this hero first appeared in New Triumph no. 1, 1984. Later the two created a second hero “Infinite Man” which Shainblum says is mostly Morrissette’s doing.

In 1995 and 1996, the two teamed up again to create “Angloman”.

In 1998, under license from Richard Comely, and as co-plotters, Mark wrote and Sandy Carruthers who also penciled Captain Canuck newspaper strips 293 to 304 and 311 to 316, illustrated, “Captain Canuck: Utopian Moments” which they intended to publish as a four part mini-comic series. Difficulties arose and only part one was published.

Starting with the September 1999 issue of chickaDEE magazine, Mark wrote the “Daisy Dreamer” serial which Gabriel Morrissette was already illustrating. He continued to write this feature till the March 2001 issue.

Mark contributed stories to graphic magazines Black Zeppelin, Love Fantasy, written articles for Ahoy Magazine, Comics Review, and Graffiti.

SGT. SAWCHUK

SGT. SAWCHUK

“Sgt. Sawchuk” and his partner “The Red Surge” are two Royal Canadian Mounted Police types created by Nelson da Rocha, Xan Grey and Stephany Lein.

The story “Mayhem In Stampede City” is semi-comical but also deals with fears of an American takeover and also the desire of Canadians for superheroes who officialdom is determined to keep out of the public eye.

SERGEANT RENFREW

SERGEANT RENFREW

This humorous strip was based on Sergeant Renfrew of the RCMP, a character created by stand up comedian Dave Broadfoot. Broadfoot wrote the strip while Olga Urbansky illustrated it. It was syndicated by Sneyd Syndicate Inc. and ran in the Toronto Star beginning Sept. 10, 1979 and ending 6 Sept. 1980. It also appeared in the Kitchener-Waterloo Record. It is easy to see that the cartoon character was modelled on Dave Broadfoot as he did his stand up portrayal of “Sergeant Renfrew”.

SÉRAPHIN

SÉRAPHIN

Séraphin, L’Histoire Illustrée d’un home et son péché “ was a cartoon strip that appeared in Le Bulletin des agriculteurs from October 1951 to September 1970. It was drawn by Albert Chartier using scripts for the radio then television series “Les Belles Histoires des pays d’en haut” written by Claude-Henri Grignon. In its television format the series, broadcast by Radio Canada, ran from October 8, 1956 to June 1970. The series was in turn based on the novel L’homme et son péché “ written by Grignon in 1933. The novel was a simple story of a young woman Donalda who is forced to forsake her true love Alexis and marry the rich but parsimonious Séraphin who is mayor of the town. She dies of a strange sickness and he is killed in a house fire trying to save his money. However, when transformed into the radio and cartoon series the story was greatly expanded to become episodes in the lives of various citizens of the town.
