SHUSTER Joe

SHUSTER Joe

This Toronto born cartoonist had the Joe Shuster Awards named after him.

Born 10 July 1914 in Toronto.

Shuster, first cousin of comedian Frank Shuster moved to Cleveland, Ohio, with his family when he was nine years old. He studied art at John Huntington Polytechnical Institute and the Cleveland School of Art, where he met his collaborator, Siegel. The pair began publishing science fiction magazines and in 1936 broke into the comic book business by drawing lackluster adventure tales. Shuster’s illustrations were rudimentary but well conceived.

They then created the Superman comic book character. In the original version Superman’s mild-mannered alter ego, Clark Kent, worked for the Daily Star, which was patterned after the Toronto Star. The newspaper’s name in the strip was changed later to The Daily Planet.

In 1938 the duo sold Superman for $130 to Action Comics, but failed to copyright the character. They were paid to draw the series as staffers until 1947 when the “Man of Steel” became the most famous hero in comic book history. When they sued for a more equitable percentage of royalties, they were fired and Shuster stopped drawing completely.

By the mid-1970s he was blind and living in an apartment in Queens, New York. When the first Superman movie, starring Christopher Reeve, made $82.5 million, Siegel sued, and DC comics restored their creators’ credits and agreed to pay each of them $20 000 a year for life.

Died 30 June 1992 in Los Angeles, California U.S.A.

SHIELDS George

SHIELDS George

This cartoonist for the Evening Telegram [Toronto] was born in Toronto in 1872. At age fourteen years, he began as a printer’s devil at the Evening Telegram and later became a cartoonist there for sixty-two years. He was elected to the Toronto City Council in 1923 and to the Ontario Provincial Legislature in 1926.

A staunch Conservative, he was critical of both Laurier for his failure to build a Canadian navy in support of Britain and his Reciprocity Bill and of William Lyon Mackenzie King. He produced a booklet of cartoons highly critical of Mackenzie King’s “five cent speech, during the 1930 federal election. He visited Britain in 1910, where he watched and cartooned the Parliamentary debate over the veto power of the House of Lords. Shields signed his cartoons with a graphic of one shield in the shadow of another.

He died in 1952.
