SNEYD Douglas (Doug)
“Without Hugh Hefner none of this would have been possible.” Doug Sneyd, The Hecklers, 251.
Born 1933 in Guelph.
In the 1950’s, after graduating from high school in Guelph, Ontario, he worked as a commercial artist in Montréal then Toronto. He became a freelance illustrator of books and magazines. He developed a single panel news cartoon which appeared in the Toronto Star and became syndicated though out North America.
He brought a folio of his illustrations to Chicago in the early 1960’s and showed them to a Playboy editor. The editor convinced him to try his hand at cartooning. He became established with that magazine regularly drawing a full page, full colour “girlie” cartoon. From 1964, he has sold about five hundred cartoons to Playboy. In 1969, he moved his family to Orillia where his studio overlooks Lake Couchiching.
He branched out into political cartooning experimenting with several features for the Toronto Star. He eventually settled on a daily lighthearted cartoon strip called “Scoops”. He syndicated it and it appeared in over a hundred newspapers in Canada and the U.S. running approximately 1979 to 1982.
In 1993, he wrote, produced and directed, for the Ontario Government, “Black-eyed Susan” an educational film about spousal abuse.
