RAESIDE Adrian

C:\Users\Robert\Documents\CARTOONING ILLUSTRATION ANIMATION\IMAGE OF PERSON\R\RAESIDE Adrian, The Demented Decade, bc.jpg                  The Demented Decade: back cover.

Born 1 July 1957 in Dunedin New Zealand. Moved to Salt Spring Island B.C. in 1972 after a brief time in England.

He worked at various jobs across Canada from land surveying on the northern British Columbia coast to unloading grain cars in Thunder Bay Ontario.

He entered the field of illustration in 1977 when he illustrated five children’s books, including Lucky Little Dragon, that his mother Joan had written.

He created three cartoon strips “George and Jacques” (February 1979 to April 1979, followed by “Captain Starship”, April 1979 to September 1991.

Starting about 1980 he became an editorial cartoonist for the Times-Colonist [Victoria], producing six cartoons a week. In addition, he created cartoons for magazines, government publications and annual reports. He self-syndicated for the newspaper in B.C. and was syndicated for newspapers across Canada, the U.S., Australia and New Zealand.

In the late 1980’s he was commissioned with other cartoonists Anthony Jenkins and Vance Rodewalt to do covers for CBC’s magazine Radio Guide. They were later joined by Graham Harrop, Peter Lynde, and Barbara Wood a Vancouver artist doing whimsical urbanscapes. This project continued into the late 1990’s.

In 1988, he founded an animation company to produce animated editorial cartoons for C.B.C television. Over four years this expanded to the point where he produced and directed animated shows for Turner Broadcasting and Children’s Television Workshop and adapted Jim Henson’s Muppet characters for animation. Although he left the production side of the business in 1992, he remained active in the field animating the book The Way Things Work for BBC and writing the first and second seasons for Atomic Betty.

In 1990, while still working on “Captain Starship”, he embarked on a new Sunday only colour strip called “Toulouse”. It appeared in the Times-Colonist. Over the following years it evolved into a daily strip and was renamed “The Other Coast”. In 2001 it was syndicated by Creator’s Syndicate and has appeared in more than 150 newspapers worldwide. It can still be seen on the internet.

Adrian describes it as it exists today. “Who lives on The Other Coast? Talentless television scriptwriters, rabid environmentalists (as long as what they’re saving can’t be turned into luggage), gluttons, finicky vegans, convicted embezzlers, mind-numbing bands, and assorted paranoid wackos. Along with whales, dogs, and other off-beat inhabitants of the animal kingdom, these characters bring utter absurdness to The Other Coast on a daily basis.

It’s a parody of life … sort of.”                                                                                            (The Other Coast: This Is Your Rock Garden Isn’t It? 2005: 4.)

RAE George M.

RAE George Menendez.

He was born in New York apparently in 1906. this creator of “Canada Jack” and “The RCMP” signed his work as “Rae”, “Geo”, “Dez” and just plain “R”. He was a freelance artist who worked on magazines including Canadian pulps, books, trading cards and comic books. He is best remembered work his work with Educational Projects where he created “Canada Jack” and cartooned a series “RCMP” based events from the files of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. But he also drew covers for the White Circle imprint of Collins Sons & Co. two of which were B Diamond Ranch by Wade Smith and Take This Man by Maysie Grey. He is also known to have done a cover for the Canadian pulp Uncanny Tales published by A. Valentine.

Apparently Rae was not particularly enamoured with comic books, upon the cessation of Canadian Heroes he returned to the commercial art field and later went on to pursue a fine arts career. He became President of the Arts Club of Montreal. He later met and became friends with Adrian Dingle creator of “Nelvana”.

Rae died in April 1992.

RACEY Arthur G.

RACEY Arthur George

This political cartoonist was born in Quebec City in 1870. He attended McGill University where he developed an interest in caricature. His cartoons were first published in the Montréal Witness, Le Canard, Grip, Moon and other publications of the day. He joined the Montreal Star in 1899 where he worked to 1941. He succeeded Henri Julien as chief cartoonist after the latter died in 1908. His cartoons were also reprinted in the Life, Le Monde Illustré and Punch and newspapers around the world. He sometimes signed under the pseudonym “Chic”. He was also recognized for his paintings and water colours and often gave lectures on Canadian art and other matters. One lecture tour, for the Red Cross during the First World War in which he presented lantern slides of some of his wartime cartoons along with a running commentary, raised $50,000. In 1917 he was one of seven judges for an international cartoon competition inaugurated in New York by the American Art Student and Commercial Artist. He produced Canada’s, possibly the world’s, first comic book or graphic novel The Englishman in Canada in 1902. He died in Montréal on 21 December 1941.

SWORD OF DESTINY

THE SWORD OF DESTINY

“Billy Arthur” the hero of “The Sword of Destiny” was created by Adrian Dingle. It appears to have been a World War Two series about a young Canadian fighting the Nazi. It appeared in Top Flight Comics, 1-1, February 1942, the only issue Hillborough Studio published before ceasing operations.
