LYNDE Peter
From website ladysmithfamilydentistry.ca/about
Born October 1946 in London England. He and his parents migrated to Canada when he was eighteen months old. He grew up on Vancouver Island.
He studied at the Vancouver School of Art from 1964 to 1965, then at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary from 1968 to 1969. Both schools lacked cartooning programs which was where his interest lay.
After working in a Vancouver printing shop for a year he launched his career as a freelancer drawing illustrations and cartoons using whatever style the client asked for, which must have been an excellent apprenticeship in the craft. What followed was an eighteen-year commercial art career from a base in Vancouver. During this time he worked for most of the Vancouver advertising agencies including Palmer Jarvis (McDonald’s), McKim (various), and Cockfield Brown (Mazda). He also worked on projects including those for Air Canada, BC government, Canadian Pacific Airlines, A&W Restaurants, Harbour Publishing, Vancouver Sun and The Province also Vancouver.
In 1986 he began painting in water colour and this activity continued when in 1988 he moved to Salt Spring Island. He focused on this enterprise for about two years then discovered that though his paintings were selling well the framer was making more money than he was. He returned to commercial art but remained on Salt Spring Island. The internet made this possible. In addition he did one cartoon a week for the local newspaper Gulf Island Driftwood.
About this time, he was selected along with Graham Harrop, and Barbara Wood a Vancouver artist doing whimsical urbanscapes to join other cartoonists Anthony Jenkins, Adrian Raeside, and Vince Rodewalt to do covers in a series commissioned for CBC’s magazine Radio Guide. This project continued into the late 1990’s. In this same decade while living on Salt Spring Island he sailed among the other gulf islands passing seaside settlements. These captured his his imagination, and out of it he created a series of whimsical landscapes partly shown below.
He continued in the commercial art field till about 2013 then his interest in woodworking and welding fabrication led him into these pursuits as hobbies. In retirement he brought his varied skills including several of his paintings to support his wife’s dental clinic. He built the fireplace in their residence (see below). The portrait above the fireplace is a watercolour of his stepdaughter. In addition he has built a couple of aluminum small boat trailers and is currently rebuilding an old fiberglass speedboat.
