ACTIVE JIM

ACTIVE JIM

“Active Jim” first appears in Active Comics 3, as a kind of afterthought in the issue following the introduction of the “Active Club”. From the first story it is clear he was created to give the “Active Club a human face. The tie-in couldn’t be closer. He is Director of the “Active Club”. He will be answering the mail to “his” club, and he really wants to hear from members. In issue 4, the “Active Club” message becomes “Active Jim’s Monthly Message”.

He appears to have been a bit of an orphan with no creator claiming to be his parent. in his first appearance. Ross Saakle handles the next five episodes, then Edmond Good tries his hand at it for two. Adrian Dingle who also goes by the pseudonym “Darian” and is probably responsible for the episodes with no author identified interspacing the ones he claims, carries the bulk of the serial. Finally, Fred Kelly cartoons issues 22 to 27 which carries the last episode. Each episode is about three to four pages long reaching down to a single page episode by Ross and the last one done by Fred reaching seven pages.

“Active Jim” in his open neck shirt, sweater with a “A” on it and slacks is about as far from a costumed hero as you can get. A university sophomore comes to mind when viewing him. He and his secretary/partner Joan Brian at least initially appear to be in their late teens probably intended to approximate the age of Active Comics readers. His moniker “active” is deserved as he participates in rugby, hockey, and baseball. His teams are all called “Active”. He is clearly based in Toronto and when Ross is cartoonist “he is portrayed as an employee of Bell. Ross includes himself as another employee in the serial, interacting with “Active Jim”. The episodes center around sports and thwarting petty criminals. There is a lightness to them and a complete absence of war themes.

This changes abruptly when Edmond Good takes over. The “Active Jim” and Joan are now fighting spies and saboteurs. This theme continues when Adrian Dingle takes over the serial. The episodes are very much home front stories. The Nazi are thwarted from stealing the money the “Active Club” has gathered for Victory Bonds. “Active Jim” thwarts a villain contaminating blood donations or another saboteur mixing crushed glass in with salt being spread on the road. He confounds saboteurs on his uncle Fred’s farm where he is working to produce food for the war effort. One can follow the course of the war in these stories. As the war in Europe winds down and the war in the Pacific continues issue 18 tells a story of Japanese saboteurs. In issue 19, the war has disappeared, and the conflict is again with criminals.

As this serial continued, “Active Jim” evolved into a more adult figure. The connection between “Active Jim” and the “Active Jim Club” became more tenuous. With issue 25 the “Active Jim Club” disappeared and “Active Jim” continued as a standalone character.

Fred Kelly now had the job of cartooning “Active Jim”. At first, he tried youthful hijinks adventures such as a fight in a roadhouse bar, but soon returned to crime stories. Among these is the seven-page story in Active Comics 25, which is among the best in the “Active Jim” serial. We’re back into sports stories this time football. “Shifty Smith” attempts to bribe “Active Jim” into losing a game but, of course, fails. He then tries the other star player “Leo Nemo”. This time he has an advantage. He has bought the mortgage to “Leo’s” father’s store and threatens to put the father out of business unless “Leo” co-operates. After losing a game, a conscience stricken “Leo” confesses all to “Active Jim” who presents the whole story to the team. They in turn draw up a plan where they scrape together all the money they can. Then through a middle man they bet “Sneaky Smith that their team will win. “Smith” gives to the middleman whose connection to the team he does not know odds of 2 to 1. The ream of course wins, and they give the money to “Leo” who can then pay-off, his father’s mortgage. The appealing and unusual aspect of this story comes from the approach in which “Active Jim” and the team thwart “Sneaky Smith” and his associates by focusing on aiding their team mate rather than confronting the villains.

ACTIVE CLUB – ACTIVE JIM CLUB

ACTIVE CLUB – ACTIVE JIM CLUB

This club organized by Bell Features and appearing in Active Comics was an early initiative of the company to reach out to its readers. Its name began as “Active Club”, but was changed to “Active Jim Club” in issue 4 after “Active Jim” had first appeared in issue 3.

It was basically a couple of newsletters, one being “Active Jim’s Monthly Comment” which usually contained a coded message, and the other “Club News & Views. On the rare occasions when an author was identified he was Adrian Dingle.

The club became an important bridge when Cy Bell decided that his company would sponsor a hockey team which was called the “Panthers”. Club members and Active Comics readers were kept informed of the “Panthers’” activities through the club’s newsletters and a cartoon story about the “Panthers” in Active Comics. An inventive way to create a link between community activities and the periodical.

A reference in an “Active Jim” episode and in an “Active Jim” newsletter combine to suggest that Active Comics were appearing in Britain. An ”Active Jim” episode in Active Comics 7, refers to letters coming from Britain. This appears to be authentic as a note at the bottom of the panel states “Addresses on request”. In the final newsletter, Active Comics 25 “Active Jim” tells members:

“Hello Gang!! I’ve been receiving quite a few letters from club members in England. They are all asking for pen pals, here in Canada!! So how about dropping them a line!!’

This is followed by 7 partial letters from youngsters with English addresses joining the club and asking to have pen pals. The club ended before any follow-up occurred nor is there any indication Bell had extended its distribution to that country. The best guess is that individuals were taking their comics with them on trips to Britain then leaving them with friends who then used the “Active Jim Club” application form.

ACE BARTON

ACE BARTON

“Ace Barton” whose name is reminiscent of Sid Baron’s “Ace Deacon” in Canadian Heroes Comics although the former is fiction and the later records actual stories of Canadian pilots, was created by Ross Saakle. This Canadian pilot in the R.A.F. appeared in Triumph Comics shortly after it was moved from Hillborough Studio to Bell Features.

“Ace Deacon” and his side-kick a cockney called “Burt Cunningham” first appear in issue 9. Burt however, rather quickly fades from the scene and eventually disappears from the serial. Although, these are adventure stories, Ross’ sense of humour is never far away as can be seen on Triumph 9 page 64 below. In spite of his name “Ace Barton’s” conflicts with Germans occur principally on the ground.

After a short episode in issue 9, where “Ace” and “Burt” bomb an oil field, a single story composed of five page episodes occupies issues 10 though 16. The two are sent on a mission to pick up and transport a package of diamonds back to the allies. They are captured by the Germans and the rest of the story involves them outwitting their captors. They are finally able to contact their home base which sends a squadron to rescue them and the diamonds. Later stories involve “Ace” fighting the Japanese and going to South America to again fight the Germans there.
