BRIGHT FUTURE

BRIGHT FUTURE

After “Weltschmerz”, Gareth Lind drew “The Bright Future” which appeared weekly on the website thecanadiancharger.com. It used some of the characters from “Weltschmerz”, but was more focused on politicians. He also began another comic strip “Footprint in Mouth” which appears in Alternatives an environmental magazine.

BRAMSTRUP Mary Ann

BRAMSTRUP Mary Ann

This family doctor’s first book was a small text novel called Saga Of A Star Stallion published by Carleton Press in New Brunswick in 1973. This was followed in 1981 by a graphic novel illustrated by Mary Ann Oulton called Star Destroyer, published by Larsen Offset Printing also in New Brunswick. It told of a dystopia set in the U.S.

In 1984 she first conceived the idea for “Dragon’s Star”. It involved a future human galactic utopia that over thousands of years through human greed degenerated into a dystopia of warfare. Humans were nearly annihilated by the “shonn” one of the races humans had genetically created. But they were saved by another race the “Hybrids” which combined the characteristics of the “shonn” with those of humans. They had been created by the “Star Destroyer” a machine/computer which humans had also engineered. The “hybrids” stood between “shonn” and human but they had their own agenda. Within this world Chandra a fourteen year old human and Marrik a Draconis sapiens have their adventures and intrigues.

The concept was realized at a Maplecon in Ottawa where Mary Ann through Deni Sim met Mark Shainblum owner of Matrix Graphic Series. Through Mark, she met Ian Carr. The design team for “Dragon’s Star” was established and its publisher in place. What followed were 3 issues of the periodical Dragon’s Star published from the beginning of 1987. Clearly the series was to go beyond three issues. The fourth was to be “The Camberra Connection” but Matrix Graphic Series ceased operations.

In 1989 Caliber Press in Michigan picked up the series and published in a book, the stories and background from the three Matrix periodicals plus the unpublished fourth issue plus two more chapters to round out the novel. Caliber followed this with the first issue of a new periodical called Dragon’s Star 2, January 1994, this time illustrated by Walter Simonson. There were plans to publish a second issue, but it is uncertain whether this happened.

About the same time Caliber published another Bramstrup story, illustrated by Patrick Zircher in a periodical Triarch 1, January 1990. It as well was to be followed by a second issue which it is also uncertain whether it appeared.

In 2000 Mary Ann back in New Brunswick apparently gave up her practice as a family physician in Fredericton but took up family practice again in Nackawic New Brunswick by 2009. There is no indication she wrote any graphic stories after “Dragon Star”.

BRAIN

THE BRAIN

A character created by Leo Bachle for Bell Features, Active Comics. Gordon Bell aka “The Brain” was principally a crime fighter rather than an agent fighting the Axis powers.  Leo cartooned the series till Active  22 then Andre Kulbach took over. The serial itself lasted only five more issues. This is another indication that Bell Features was losing its artists leaving only a core of talent.

Born 20 July 1951 in Winnipeg Manitoba.

Before this Toronto-based author began writing books for children, She earned a Bachelor of Science at the University of Western Ontario and was an occupational therapist and journalist. According to Diane Turbide, Paulette interested in writing children’s literature had been researching the field but had not been able to come up with an idea. Then one night she was up late feeding her new-born daughter and watching a MASH episode. In it, “Hawkeye” refused to enter a dark cave during an air raid because of claustrophobia. To quote Pauline, “He said something like ‘Look, if I were a turtle I’d be afraid to go into my shell’ and that was the genesis of Franklin in the Dark”. She wrote a story called “A Turtle They Called Chicken” she submitted it to one Canadian and several U.S. publishers, all of whom rejected it. Finally, she submitted it to Kids Can Press who were interested enough to work with Paulette on the manuscript. They partnered her with illustrator Brenda Clark and the “Franklin” series was born. The team has written more than thirty Franklin stories which have been published internationally and made into an animated series by Nelvana.

Paulette also collaborated with Brenda on Big Sarah’s Little Boots. She wrote Oma’s Quilt illustrated by a Stéphane Jorisch for which both won the Ruth Schwartz Children’s Book Award. Oma’s Quilt was animated by the National Film Board as part of their Tailpinners Series. In addition Paulette has written several children’s non-fiction books.

In 2003, she was invested as a Member Of The Order Of Canada.

BOURGEOIS Albéric

BOURGEOIS Albéric

“Editorialists are often elevated to the Senate, but not caricaturists.”                        The Hecklers: 231.

“Jacob” and “Passepoil” were pen names sometimes used by Bourgeois early in his career.

Born November 29 1876 in Montréal, he studied at l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts.

He moved to Boston around the turn of the century and was hired by the Boston Post in 1902. There he created the comic strip The Education of Annie. In addition he painted sets for the Grand Opera.

He returned to Montréal in 1904 at the invitation of Israël Tate, to work for La Patrie, where he created the cartoon strip “Les Aventures de Timothée”. He moved over to La Presse one year later and entered an association that was to last close to fifty years. He was the first Quebec cartoonist to make a consistent living from the relatively new occupation of political cartooning in the French language press. He created a traditional rural French-Canadian couple, Baptiste and Catherine, whom he used in his cartoons to reflect his own opinions about current events. His reputation grew, and he became a household word in Quebec.

He created other cartoon characters for La Presse, “Zidore”, “Toinon”, and “Pitou et son Grand-Papa”, Les Fables du parc Lafontaine, “Histoire du Canada pors les enfants, to name a few, but his most famous character was one he did not create. Père Ladébauche, was created in 1879 by the Hector Berthelot. Introduced to La Presse on March 5, 1904 by J. Charlebois, it was only when Albéric Bourgeois took it over on February 11, 1905 that it achieved its popularity.

Bourgeois was also respected as a talented writer, creating popular cabarets and several radio scripts, where he sometimes used his cartoon characters as in the case of the cabaret En Roulant Ma Boule where he used Baptiste, and Catherine .

He died 17 November1962 in Montréal.
