SOMBRE VILAIN

LE SOMBRE VILAIN

Among the six creations appearing in Le Jour on February 28, 1974, Hurtubise’s own creation “Le Sombre Vilain” was signed with the pseudonym “Zyx”. It followed the various schemes of a comic opera conspirator whose goal was the total destruction of the world. The paper lasted as a daily only to 1976. “Le Sombre Vilain” was the only strip to be brought back when the paper was revived as a weekly in 1977, but the paper again ceased operations in 1978.

Hurtubise’s very stylized and modern graphics and his caustic sense of humor put “Le Sombre Vilain” in the forefront of Francophone Canadian comics. Jacques Samson has noted “Hurtubise has managed to achieve a synthesis between text and image possibly unique in Francophone Canadian comic art.”

SNEYD Doug

SNEYD Douglas (Doug)

“Without Hugh Hefner none of this would have been possible.”                              Doug Sneyd, The Hecklers, 251.

Born December 1931 in Guelph Ontario.

In the 1950’s, after graduating from high school in Guelph, Ontario, he worked as a commercial artist in Montréal then Toronto. He became a freelance illustrator of books and magazines. He developed a single panel news cartoon which appeared in the Toronto Star and became syndicated though out North America.

He brought a folio of his illustrations to Chicago in the early 1960’s and showed them to a Playboy editor. The editor convinced him to try his hand at cartooning. He became established with that magazine regularly drawing a full page, full colour “girlie” cartoon. From 1964, he has sold about five hundred cartoons to Playboy. In 1969, he moved his family to Orillia where his studio overlooks Lake Couchiching.

He branched out into political cartooning experimenting with several features for the Toronto Star. He eventually settled on a daily lighthearted cartoon strip called “Scoops”. He syndicated it and it appeared in over a hundred newspapers in Canada and the U.S. running approximately 1979 to 1982.

In 1993, he wrote, produced and directed, for the Ontario Government, “Black-eyed Susan” an educational film about spousal abuse.

SNAKE [THE]

THE SNAKE

This was a character that Dave Darrigo of Special Studio thought suited Ron Hobbs‘ illustrative style. Ron agreed to illustrate it.

The identity, background and personal ethics of this tough uncompromising crime fighter were shrouded in mystery but the “Snake” has a strong moral sense  It was intended to be a serial but only one issue was published. An origin story about “Madame Joy” was inserted into the main plot and illustrated by Peter Hsu.

SMITH Sidney

SMITH Sidney

 Born in rural Nova Scotia.

He graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University and subsequently moved to Toronto, about 2013. He and his family returned to Halifax in 2019, in order to be closer to the larger family although it was not without some reservation. As Sydney said in his interview with Bernie: “What I will miss most is the community here in Toronto – the illustrators, editors, publishers. You get to share things with each other and you feel like you’re part of something big here – like we’re all doing something important.”

Conceived by poet JonArno Lawson, Sidewalk Flowers is an interesting story told entirely in pictures without words. It won the Governor General’s Award for both JonArno and Sydney and was named a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book both in 2015. Sydney was awarded the Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award for illustration.

Town Is by the Sea, received the United Kingdom’s Kate Greenway Medal for illustration. This book is the story of a boy whose father is a Cape Breton coal miner. Bernie Goedhart says of his illustrations: “Smith’s illustrations are stunning. He knows the area and manages to capture the light on the water, as well as the oppressive darkness of the mine.”

Inkling is a delightful fantasy story about a boy illustrating a graphic novel for a school project and his relationship with a blob of ink which helps him. The story also includes an underlying criticism of the comic book industry.

Small In The City was the first book Sydney both wrote and illustrated. He dedicated it to Shelia Barry his editor who died while this book was in progress.
