In the late 1970’s, this Ottawa based cartoonist and illustrator moved to Toronto. His cartoon stories appeared in the short-lived periodicals Andromeda and Vortex in addition he drew covers for Vortex Comics’ Mr X series, . He became a set designer on Rock & Rule (1983) produced by Nelvana Ltd. In 1886 he worked on the Care Bear series. He did not leave cartooning and illustration branching out into book covers in 1987 for Isaac Asimov’s Robot City series.

In 1988 Paul and Doug Coupland teamed up to produce a cartoon serial called “The Young And Restless Work Force Following The Baby Boom: Generation X” published in Vista Magazine from 1988 into 1990. It was apparently Doug’s first effort in writing about Generation X for which he became famous. His work appeared in another mainstream periodical Toronto Life in 1994. At the same time he was doing work for DC and Marvel Comics.

His work at Nelvana led to his producing background designs storyboard art for the Warner Brothers Animation series Batman Animated (1992-1995), Batman Beyond (1999-2001)and the film Justice League The New Frontier (2008) .

He has entered the field of graphic books drawing the graphic history adaption (2014) work of Amiiy Shales’ text history of the depression The Forgotten Man and illustrating (2023) George Orwell’s 1984.

RIP TROUSERS

RIP TROUSERS

This comic strip which appeared in the Kingston Whig-Standard and the Saint John Telegraph Journal was created by Philip Street. It ran for 10 months from the autumn of 1993 to the summer of 1994 when Philip had to discontinue it due to the workload created by his other strip “Fisher” plus his studies at Sheridan College. It was a MAD magazine type spoof on the stories of the intrepid explorers and archaeologists as told in pulp magazines and movie serials of the 1920’s and 1930’s. Interestingly “Rip Trousers” also appeared in early issues of Philip’s other strip “Fisher” as “Tom Fisher’s” favourite cartoon strip. Then in 2011 it made another short appearance in “Fisher” as a strip now written by “Tom Fisher” and illustrated by his wife “Alison” This is reminiscent of writer Dave Darrigo and illustrator Rick Taylor’s serial “Wordsmith” in which stories written by the pulp writer appeared within the main story.

RIMMER

RIMMER

This strip created by cartoonist Karl Mueller appeared in the Toronto Sun circa October 1978 to May 1980. Mueller followed it with “Fuddy and Lardette” which lasted till approximately December 1980. The two strips are the same with different names. The name change was probably caused by syndication. Jim Brigham has commented that “Rimmer” was modelled on columnist Toronto Sun Paul Rimstead. Some of the early strips appear to confirm this, but as the strip continued it had less and less to do with journalism.
