CAULFIELD H

CAULFIELD H.

Almost nothing is known about this cartoonist. He came late to the Hillborough Studio staff, his work appearing only in the last two editions of Triumph Adventure Comics. He also illustrated “Happy Holden” written by Jack Loudon, which appeared in Top Flight Comics 1-1 February 1942.

Although his work was better than a great deal of what was appearing in Bell Features, he did not transfer to that company when Hillborough was absorbed.

CARR Ian

CARR Ian

Creator of the cartoon strip “Malcolm & Eric”.

In 1979 he edited Potlatch presents The 1980 Comics Annual which showcased southern Ontario cartoonists, some of them like Michael Cherkas, Arn Saba/Katherine Collins, Bill Slavin and Steve LeBlanc who were just beginning their careers. During this time he also seems to have had a considerable influence on the choice of cartoonists for The Canadian Children’s Annual.

His story “The Outsiders” which in its initial premise – astronauts returning to earth after a long period only to find things are not as they were – owed a great deal to the first film in the Planet of the Apes series, but it took an interesting twist in the second chapter when the personality behind the ruthless tyrant mask turned out to be an old man full of conflict trying to do what was best for mankind. Unfortunately the story was cut off before the ideas presented could be developed.

During the late 1980’s, he illustrated Mary Ann Bramstrup’s Dragon’s Star, in three issues published by Matrix Graphic Series. Later Caliber Press, collected in book form these 3 issues, plus an unpublished four issue plus two more chapters to complete the novel.

During 1993 and 1994, he illustrated writer L.R. Flores very interesting serial  “Between The Covers” which was about a book publishing company. It appeared in the Globe & Mail.
