Born 5 December 1943 in Bristol, England, and lived in Australia for much of his youth he came to Toronto in 1969. Here he drew occasional illustrations and editorial cartoons for the magazine Saturday Night, and The Toronto Star. He is remembered for the four publications listed below which are consider seminal pioneering works in the development of the graphic novel.

The Cage was begun in Toronto in 1972 with the bulk of it done during 1972 to 1973 while Martin and his wife Noddy were living in Paris. It was completed in Toronto in February 1974. The ruins in Yucatan and central Mexico inspired parts of this book.

He moved to Belgium where he pursued a career as a fine arts painter. He also wrote two novels Night Train (1989) and Tomb of Zwaab (1991).

He died 3 July 2009.

Van WOERKOM Fons

Born 1943, in Holland.

He graduated from the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht Holland after studying painting for eight years.

He moved to Toronto in 1968 and drew cartoons for the Toronto Star over the next three years. A caricature of Israel’s Moshe Dayan won him the Grand Prize for Political Cartooning at the International Salon of Caricature and Cartooning.

In 1971 he moved to New York where he works for the New York Times.

Originally from Fort Smith North West Territories.

He graduated from the En”owkin International School of Writing, earned a BFA in Writing from the University of Victoria in British Columbia, and a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing from University of British Columbia. He wrote for the CBC television series “North of 60” (1992-1998) for two months under the Writer Internship Program then remained as script and culture consultant for four seasons. He has taught creative writing at University of British Columbia, Creative Writing and Story Telling at the Emily Carr Institute in Vancouver, and was Writer in Residence at the University of Alberta (2011 & 2012) and Grant McEwen University (2013 & 2014), both in Edmonton.

In addition to those listed below, he has written the graphic novel Blue Raven illustrated by Scott B. Henderson. In addition he has written three what can be best described as graphic instruction or information booklets, Path Of The Warrior (illus., Steve Sanderson), Kiss Me Deadly (illus., Chris Auchter), and Spirit (illus., Emily Brown).

He has written four collections of text short stories: Angel Wing Splash Pattern, The Moon of Letting Go, Godless But Loyal To Heaven and Night Moves.

His text novel The Lesser Blessed, was made into a feature film, which was presented in September 2012 at the Toronto International Film Festival. He has published a second novel Whistle which continues some of the themes and follows some of the characters of The Lesser Blessed.

He has also written two children’s books, with George Littlechild. His baby book Welcome Song for Baby: A Lullaby for New Borns was the official selection of the Books for BC Babies program and was given to all new born BC babies in 2008.

He has received the Canadian Author’s Association/Air Canada Award for most promising new author, and the Jugendileraturpeis Award the highest German award given for a translation among other awards for The Lesser Blessed translated by Ulrich Plezdorf. .

Born 12 July 1961. He was active in the Toronto animation, cartoon and toy design industry for 35 years.

He worked on the Nelvana produced films Care Bears II: A New Generation (1986) and Care Bears: Adventure In Wonderland (1987). He teamed up with the Radio comedy team the Frantics to cartoon “Mr. Canoehead” which appeared in Canadian Comics Cavalcade, 1-1, Summer 1986. He partnered with John Van Bruggen to do two stories for Vortex in 1983 and 1984 and with Ty Templeton for two “Plasma Monkey” stories in Ty’s periodical Stig’s Inferno.

He worked as a toy designer at Thinkway Toys a manufacturing company in Markham Ontario and helped create the original Toy Story toys in 1995.
