ZUSI Alfred (Caz)

In Joke Comics 23, Bell Features reported on all the Bell staff who were being released from the armed services, some of whom were returning to Bell. “Alfred started with us just before being called over the line by Uncle Sam. He was in Toronto at the time but was an American citizen. He had taken the “Invisible Commando” and made a very excellent job of it too. Alf. Goes under the pen-name of Caz and his episodes are still running in Commando Comics. Now at camp in Livingstone, Louisiana, in the infantry.”

ZUEHLKE Mark

ZUEHLKE Mark

In 2007 he won the Lela Common Canadian History Award for For Honour’s Sake: The War of 1812 and the Brokering of an Uneasy Peace. He is author of the Canadian Battle Series detailing the campaigns of the Canadian Army during World War II.

He collaborated with Alan Grant on The Loxleys and the War of 1812.

In recognition for his contribution to Canadian history he was awarded the 2014 Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media: The Pierre Berton Award.

He is also an accomplished mystery writer. The debut novel Hands Like Clouds in his Elias McCann series won the Crime Writer’s of Canada Arthur Elias Award for Best First Novel in 2000. Sweep Lotus also part of the series was nominated for Best Novel in 2004.

ZIMMERMANN Werner

ZIMMERMANN Werner

Born November 20, 1951 in the Austrian Alps, Zimmermann came to Canada with his parents in 1952 and settled in the Hamilton, Ontario area. He attended a fine arts program at the University of Guelph from 1970 to 1974. In 1977 he was a printmaking advisor for the Innuit at Povungnituk. In 1986 he began teaching figure drawing in the animation department at Sheridan College and in the same year began illustrating children’s books with Farmer Joe’s Hot Days. He has since earned two Governor General’s Award nominations one for Whatever You Do, Don’t Go Near That Canoe. He won the Mr. Christie’s Book Award for Pippin the Christmas Pig in 2004.

This humorous cartoon strip which began appearing in each Saturday edition of The Ottawa Citizen in 1993 was created by Dwight Macpherson. It ended in 1999.
