TERRY KANE

TERRY KANE

“Terry Kane –The Man Of A Thousand Adventures” with his secretary/companion Tina Drake was a globe-trotting adventurer searching for artifacts for his collection. He was involved in the occasional wartime story but the emphasis was the search for the mysterious in exotic locations. This character’s adventures show that Anglo-American was preparing for the post war market.

Jack Calder thought of “Terry Kane” spinning him off from another Anglo-American character. Ed Furness could not remember which one, but it was most likely “Martin Blake The Animal King”. “Martin Blake” as well emphasized the mysterious in exotic locations and downplayed wartime stories. Ed also mentioned that the “Terry Kane” character was modelled on the actor Stewart Granger.

Priscilla Hutchings and June Banfield illustrated this character.

TEMPLETON Ty

TEMPLETON Ty

“We’re none of us owed fame and fortune. It’s pleasant to have it, or frustrating      to not have enough, but that personal relationship to one’s own sense of success or failure is never about external recognition. There are days when I’m quite pleased with being a Batman creator., other days where I feel it’s just a silly job, a cog in a corporate fiction factory that means nothing in the grand scheme. Either belief is determined by my internal monologue, not by something someone else says about me. Same is true of everyone. There are ways you can internalize success or failure no matter where you find yourself in life.”                                      Ty Templeton. The Comic Journal, “Remembering Bernie Mireault: 1961-2024”. October 21, 2024.

Born 9 May 1962, in Toronto the son of sports cartoonist, editor, TV personality and author Charles Templeton.

He attended the Royal Conservatory of Music and was a co-host of CITY-TV’s “Late Great Movies”. Later drawing on his experiences at the Royal Conservatory of Music, he created Stig’s Inferno published first by Vortex Comics Inc. then Eclipse. It was the story of a young man in hell.

According to Dave Darrigo, most of Ty’s U.S. work was done for DC Comics. Mad Dog was one of his rare Marvel projects the other being Spider-Man Human Torch. He was involved in all six issues and did the covers plus half the contents. He used a 50/60’s “faux” style. The other half was done in modern style by other artists.

The comic was an “in joke for comic fans. The “Mad Dog” character came from Bob Newhart’s TV show “Bob”. Newhart played the creator Bob McKay, an old man and comics legend. Darrigo thought Templeton “…was a perfect choice for this odd adaption of a TV show.” His half of the comic was worth reading for its satire.
