JORISCH Stéphane

JORISCH Stéphane

Born 1956, in Brussels Belgium. Grew up in Lachine Québec.

This Montréaler illustrates for books magazines and has created designs for Cirque du Soleil. He is a three time winner of the Governor General’s Award for illustration including LE Monde salon Jean de … (1993), Charlotte et l’île du destin, (1999), Jabberwocky (2004) and Owl And The Pussycat, 2007). In 2008, he was co-winner with Paula Bourgeois of a Ruth Schwartz Children’s Book Award, for Omar’s Quilt (2001) and with Gilles Vigneault of Toronto Dominion’s Children’s Literature Award for Un cadeau pour Sophie. His father illustrated cartoon strips for newspapers in France.

Of The Owl And The Pussycat it has been said:

“In this unique interpretation [by the illustrator], two characters from different worlds, a wealthy owl and a pussycat from literally the “Other Side of the Tracks,” fall in love. To escape the prying eyes and disapproval of the segregated society in which they live, the star-crossed lovers sail away to a beautiful utopia in which there are no boundaries to love – a place where unions between creatures of all different shapes, sizes and species are embraced and celebrated. It is only in this pastoral paradise that the owl and the pussycat find true freedom and acceptance; only here are they able to shed their masks for good and reveal their true selves. Jorische transforms what has generally been perceived as a simple love story into a beautiful tale about tolerance and the love all human beings can experience if we embrace one another in our differences. At the same time, his playful and fantastic images (inspired by the illustrations of Lear himself, as well as the films of Fellini, the art of Miro and the Beatles Yellow Submarine) perfectly capture the humour and levity of this delightful poem. A 21st– century French Canadian illustrator and a 19th – century English poet probably have as much in common as an owl and a pussycat, but like the famous feline and foul that brought them together, theirs is a match made in heaven.”                                                                      The Owl And The Pussycat. 2007.

CHICK & DEE

CHICK & DEE

“Chick and Dee” created by Jason Stephens first appeared in chickaDEE magazine September 1999. From that point they also appeared as decoration on every cover (sometimes as the feature illustration) and they were soon used in activities and other sections of the magazine.

“Chick” was clearly based on a Chickadee, but “Dee” with a broken egg shell for a helmet and large googles was unidentifiable beyond being a bird. Additional characters were quickly introduced: “Bruno the Monster Kid” who wanted to be a dressmaker but whose hands were too big for sewing, and the bullies “Fang” and “Jack”. By the time he left the series in the summer of 2003, Jason had introduced a menagerie of characters including: “Jack” who was added to the bullies, “Robin”, “Chick’s” older sister, “Sheldon” “Dee’s” younger brother who was logically an egg, and “Arf” the neighbourhood dog. The episodes were as one would expect light-hearted and reflected the kinds of activities and problems that the readers 6 to 9 years would experience. The bullies, of course, always came out the losers.

Steve Charles Manale took over the cartooning and illustration of “Chick and Dee” with issue September 2004. The tone of the episodes remained the same but Steve added “Petal”, a monkey character to the group. The characters have become ubiquitous throughout the magazine appearing in different functions in addition to the page long cartoon strip.

As of 2019, Steve Charles Manale was still working on “Chick and Dee”.

ARCHY & THE WHIZZZ KIDS

ARCHY AND THE WHIZZZ KIDS

“Melissa and Jeff have a dinosaur bird called an Archeopteryx. He looks like a toy, but Archy is their magic friend. When they hold his wings and both say WHIZ, he can take them anywhere.”                                                                                           Alan & Lea Daniel. Chickadee, 1-1, January 1979: 20.

Thus opens the first cartoon adventure serial in the periodical chickaDee. Created by Alan & Lea Daniel it appeared for at least the first year of the magazine and probably continued till 1983 when Lynda Cooper’s “Daisy Dreamer” first appeared, and likely replaced it.

“Melissa” and “Jeff” with the help of “Archy” travelled in space to the arctic, a baker’s shop, a glacier or even the moon and through time back to the age of the dinosaurs. As with other serials in chickaDee the serial attempted to present information through the means of an adventure.
