HONOURABLE FREDDY

THE HONOURABLE FREDDY

This is another serial created by Hall & Walker for Maple Leaf Publishing Co.  It centers around Freddy Briscomb the son of Earl of Briscomb and a refugee from England. He finds himself in a boy’s school called Wiltshire College presumably in Canada. The serial chronicles his adventures from that point. Interestingly, “Freddy” and “Butch” who are enemies at the beginning of the serial become friends.

HOLMES Randolph

HOLMES Randolph (Rand)

He was born February 22, 1942 in Turo Nova Scotia but grew up in Edmonton Alberta. After he left school he got married and took a job as a sign painter. In an interview he was to say, “That’s how I learned brushwork and lettering.” After about five years: “ In 1968 my brother turned me on to psychedelics – I woke up – left my wife and job and split for the west coast, grew my hair down to my ass, moved into a commune and vowed never again to do anything I didn’t want to do, especially for money – after I made that simple decision I was suddenly free.”

He moved to Vancouver in 1969. He created the cartoon strip “Harold Hedd” which became a regular feature in the Georgia Straight. He finally discontinued the strip because, “an era had come to an end. Harold Hedd was part of that era and I had nothing left to say about it..”

He continued to do editorial cartoons and the occasional cover for Georgia Straight. He also contributed to White Lunch Comix, and Fog City Comics among others.

In 1982 he with his second wife moved from Vancouver to Lasqueti Island. In the 1980’s he created a final “Harold Hedd” series “Hitler’s Cocaine” and did art work for science fiction comics like Twisted Tales and Alien Worlds. In his last years he concentrated on oil painting.

He died in Nanaimo March 15, 2002 at age sixty from Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

His major influences were Wood (mid-fifties Mad), and Will Eisner.

HOLMES INCORP.

HOLMES INCORPORATED

Holmes Incorporated was conceived by Ty Templeton and used as a framework within which various graduates of the Toronto Cartoonist Workshop/Comic Book Bootcamp could try out various story ideas and illustration styles. There seems to be a fascination among Canadian cartoonists with the Sherlock Holmes saga. Dan and David Day also brought out a series of periodicals illustrating Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories.

“When hope’s light fails                                                                                                       Darkness prevails                                                                                                               And justice turns her gaze.                                                                                                Into the fray                                                                                                                          Holmes Inc. stray                                                                                                              The flag of truth to raise.”

According to the background given for “Holmes Inc.” Sherlock Holmes and his secret love Irene Alder sired a son “Montgomery Adler”. “Montgomery” had two children “Edgar” and “Lucille”. Grandfather “Sherlock” trained them both in his methods of deduction and forensics. Their work in World War II made them both heroes. After the war “Lucille” married the grandson of “Doctor Watson”. “Edgar” became the head of British Intelligence. He had two sons “Sherlock The Second” and Thomas who died as a toddler. “Edgar” organized “Holmes Inc.” which worked as a clandestine organization. Eventually his son “Sherlock The Second” became second in command and reoriented the organization away from its covert roots to an international corporation. “Sherlock Holmes The Second” also had two children a son “Edgar Holmes The Second” and a daughter “Sherlock Holmes The Third”, a name she didn’t particularly like and so altered to “Trey”. Both are incorporated into the family firm. Other additions to the firm are “Elizabeth Watson” the American daughter of “Lucille” and Dr. Watson’s grandson. And “Arthur ‘Artie’ Holmes” the great-great grandson of “Mycroft Holmes” “Sherlock Holmes” brother.

About the same time he was developing this concept Ty was also developing a similar concept for “Northern Guard”. The difference being that while these characters are descendants of an earlier character, that characters in Northern Guard were largely new creations using earlier characters names.

Within the structure and Holmes characters that Ty established, various graduates created stories and illustrative styles. The stories range from detective, human interest, horror etc. and the variety of styles is suggested below in GALLERY..
