SCHÖNEFELD Klaus

SCHÖNEFELD Klaus

Born 1, January 1963.

Klaus was principally a commercial artist with an avocation in sequential art. His work appeared only in the publications of Vortex Comics Inc. and usually in association with his friend and roommate Ty Templeton. They both attended the Ontario College of Art and Design.

Early on he and Ty worked on a character which would eventually become “Stig” as a potential newspaper cartoon strip but there was no interest and so the character was dropped until Bill Marks picked it up and Ty continued with it in the publication Stig’s Inferno. In partnership again with Ty he developed the character “Kevin Mace”, a send up of the tough gun-for-hire genre . They both contributed to the first issue of Kevin Mace but in the second issue Klaus cartooned the whole story which appeared in colour. The second issue appeared in February 1986. Meanwhile he was colouring issues of Mister X while Ty lettered them. At the same time, he illustrated an episode and a story.

This all ended abruptly on 8, May 1986 when Klaus died of heart failure at the age of 23 years.

SAW Lew

SAW Lew

In my time, editors wanted cartoons to be illustrated clichés.”                                Lew Saw, The Hecklers: 250.

Born 1922 in Western Australia.

He left school at fourteen years old to apprentice as a jeweler’s engraver. During World War 2, he joined the Royal Australian Air Force and trained in Canada. After the war he became an editorial cartoonist for The Perth Daily News in Australia. His wife was Canadian and so in 1952 he moved to Canada. After applying at several newspapers, he was hired by the Tribune [Winnipeg].

In 1957, disliking prairie winters, he moved to Vancouver where he freelanced until he became a cartoonist for the Province [Vancouver]. Disillusioned with the newspaper business and the prevailing attitudes towards cartoonists, he quit the business and went into animation.
