HOLMES INCORP.

HOLMES INCORPORATED

Holmes Incorporated was conceived by Ty Templeton and used as a framework within which various graduates of the Toronto Cartoonist Workshop/Comic Book Bootcamp could try out various story ideas and illustration styles. There seems to be a fascination among Canadian cartoonists with the Sherlock Holmes saga. Dan and David Day also brought out a series of periodicals illustrating Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories.

“When hope’s light fails                                                                                                       Darkness prevails                                                                                                               And justice turns her gaze.                                                                                                Into the fray                                                                                                                          Holmes Inc. stray                                                                                                              The flag of truth to raise.”

According to the background given for “Holmes Inc.” Sherlock Holmes and his secret love Irene Alder sired a son “Montgomery Adler”. “Montgomery” had two children “Edgar” and “Lucille”. Grandfather “Sherlock” trained them both in his methods of deduction and forensics. Their work in World War II made them both heroes. After the war “Lucille” married the grandson of “Doctor Watson”. “Edgar” became the head of British Intelligence. He had two sons “Sherlock The Second” and Thomas who died as a toddler. “Edgar” organized “Holmes Inc.” which worked as a clandestine organization. Eventually his son “Sherlock The Second” became second in command and reoriented the organization away from its covert roots to an international corporation. “Sherlock Holmes The Second” also had two children a son “Edgar Holmes The Second” and a daughter “Sherlock Holmes The Third”, a name she didn’t particularly like and so altered to “Trey”. Both are incorporated into the family firm. Other additions to the firm are “Elizabeth Watson” the American daughter of “Lucille” and Dr. Watson’s grandson. And “Arthur ‘Artie’ Holmes” the great-great grandson of “Mycroft Holmes” “Sherlock Holmes” brother.

About the same time he was developing this concept Ty was also developing a similar concept for “Northern Guard”. The difference being that while these characters are descendants of an earlier character, that characters in Northern Guard were largely new creations using earlier characters names.

Within the structure and Holmes characters that Ty established, various graduates created stories and illustrative styles. The stories range from detective, human interest, horror etc. and the variety of styles is suggested below in GALLERY..
