“What is really amazing is that he was able to make a living freelancing at a time when there weren’t any freelance cartoonists in the country.”                                    Roy Peterson

He was a freelance a cartoonist who appeared in magazines like The Star Weekly, Weekend and Maclean’s and produced the books listed below. In 1965 at the Second International Salon of Cartoons in Montréal he shared the top prize in the editorial cartoons division with Victor Weiz. He was awarded  The Toronto Art Director’s Medal For Achievement for his illustration in Maclean’s, 1 July 1952 for “Home – The Last Sweat Shop”.

He did film strips for the National Film Board. In his later years he turned to sculpture, building his own foundry.

He was born about 1921 in Brockville Ontario. He lived in Halifax and spent four years travelling the world as a ship’s wireless operator. He went to Montréal in 1945 studied painting for two years and began selling cartoons. From the late 1940’s to his death, he and his family resided in Morin Heights, Québec in a rebuilt homesteader’s house known locally as Whalley’s Folly. His chief hobby was playing the oboe. WESLER C. H.

An editorial cartoonist, he was among the first to work at the Toronto Star. Robert Crew thought his slashing style was surprisingly modern. However J.E. Atkinson who took over the Star in December 1908 found him too harsh and so Wesler left the paper soon after.

WERTHMAN William C.

“Art must be an expression of its time as seen by the artist himself. Our Canadian cartoonists have presented a remarkably true and unprejudiced account of political economic and cultural development.”                                                            The Hecklers: 253.

Born in Germany, he immigrated to Newfoundland in 1951.

He became the editorial cartoonist for the Evening Telegram [St John’s] from 1955 to 1959. H e moved to New Brunswick in 1963 and joined The Fredericton Gleaner staying there till 1970. He also contributed cartoons to the Citizen [Ottawa].

WEBBER Georgia

WEBBER Georgia

She is cartoon editor for carte blanche, Guest Services Co-ordinator for the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, and Distribution and Marketing Director at Paper Pusher and Papirmass.

She created the cartoon memoir Dumb which chronicles her severe vocal injury and her ongoing recovery.

“In the pages of Dumb, a deeply personal graphic memoir, Georgia Webber renders the everyday challenges that come with voicelessness. Earning a living becomes a near impossible task. Conversing with friends becomes an exhausting hurdle. Her raw cartooning style captures her frustration, and the anxiety that advances from two fronts: the ways she is perceived by others and the new doubt-ridden ways she perceives herself. But throughout her silent journey, she learns how deeply her voice and identity are Intertwined and discovers new ways of expressing herself.”                    Dumb: Living Without A Voice: Back cover
