This Montréal publisher launched The Canadian Illustrated News Saturday 15 January 1870. This was the first photo-illustrated magazine in history. The magazine used a photo-engraving process developed by the engraver William Leggo of Quebec.

He organized a company of Canadian and U.S. investors, which published The New York Daily Graphic, using Leggo’s photo-engraving technique. Launched 30 October 1869, it was the first fully illustrated newspaper in the United States.

He went bankrupt in 1974, and lost The Canadian Illustrated News. He rebuilt his publishing business and launched The Dominion Illustrated News in 1885 after the new owners of The Canadian Illustrated News closed its doors in 1883

DEREK OF BRAS d’ Or

DEREK OF BRAS d’ OR

This short lived feature, was created by writer Glen Guest and illustrator A.L. Alexander for Triumph Adventure Comics when published by Hillborough Studios. It did not transfer to the Bell Features Triumph, and Guest and Alexander also vanish from the graphic magazine industry.

Derek MacGregor is a young east coast fisherman. In his first adventure, he joins a crew to go Sword fishing. They encounter a German submarine and notify a RCN corvette while Derek disables the submarine’s periscope with a rifle shot. The corvette destroys the sub with depth charges and the fishing crew rescue the German sailors.

In the second story Derek is just home from his submarine adventures when he encounters a bank robbery in which he fights the bank robbers. It is clear that the story was to continue but it did not.

The character is based on Angus Macaskill, “The Giant of Cape Breton”. He was 7 feet tall and weighed about 500 pounds. He lived near St Ann’s Bay in Victoria county.
