SALON INTERNATIONAL DE LA CARICATURE

SALON INTERNATIONAL DE LA CARICATURE                                                              THE INTERNATIONAL SALON OF CARTOONS

“Before bringing this epistle to a close I would like to mention an indefatigable   Canadian  cartoonist Robert LaPalme O.C. Robert was the originator, architect       and   driving force behind the Montreal International Salon of Cartoons since its   inception in 1964 [actually 1963]. The Salon in my opinion was the most professionally   organized cartoon competition in the world.”                                    Ted Martin: Canadian Cartoonist, v. 1, October 1989: 6.

The Salon International de la Caricature, was an annual world-wide cartoon competition and exhibition held in Montréal. Its founder and director was Robert LaPalme. It began in 1963 in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de and then in the stock exchange tower in la Place Victoria. In 1968 Le Pavillon International de l‘Humour,  Terre des hommes began hosting it. Its international reputation was confirmed when in 1977 it was given recognition by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization. According to Ted Martin’s 1989 letter to Canadian Cartoonist, Montréal withdrew financial support and the Salon closed in 1988.
