Born in Northern Ireland, at 5 years old he migrated with his family to Canada.

He studied media at Ryerson University and worked in the film industry  in Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

In 1999, with the publication of his first book, System Shock he left the film industry to focus on writing. He developed educational radio plays for the BBC and adapted TV scripts for Kids Can Press.

He has created graphic books for A & C Publishers, Owl Magazine, Scholastic Canada, Stone Arch Books, Capstone Books and Orca Books Publishers. They have included the “Max Finder Mystery Series” with a variety of illustrators including Michael Cho, the “Graphic Adventure Series” with illustrator Mike Deas and the “Geeked Out Mystery Series” done by O’Donnell himself.

In 2016 he graduated with a Masters Degree from the Early Childhood Studies program at Ryerson University. In addition to teaching grade 1 students, he is an External Collaborator at Ryerson University’s EDGE Lab exploring the use of video games as learning tools for children and is a founding member of GamingEdus a group of educators using video games to help learners.
