SCOTT Walter

SCOTT Walter

Born in Kahnawake a Mohawk reserve on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River next to Montréal.

He graduated from Concordia University in 2009. From 2009 to 2011 he drifted into the visual arts not quite knowing what to do. At the same time he became involved in the punk music scene and lived in Montréal’s St. Henri district a home for artists, outsiders and outcasts.

This environment (Matt Groening’s Life in Hell was also an influence) was the inspiration for “Wendy” who first appeared on a placemat after a party. Scott started putting it on Facebook for his friends and it appeared in the fashion magazine of one of Walter’s friends. The “Wendy” character began to develop to have friends and relationships Tina and Jeff, each of whom became their own characters. The world of “Wendy” became more complex and evolved into a satire the art world, it participants, its galleries and other institutions.

The year 2015 was big for Walter. His “Wendy” appeared in the Spring edition of canadianart. . On April 8, a billboard he created was unveiled at Mercer Union a centre for contemporary arts in Toronto. On April 18, his video, Wendy – Live, a combination of images and readings which was shot in September 2017, was shown at the Toronto Images Festival, annual exhibition devoted to independent and experimental film, video, new media and media installation.

Walter was Artist in Residence at the Art Gallery Of Ontario from August 13 to December 11, 2016. An exhibition was part of his residency. He completed a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Guelph in 2018.

“Wendy” has been described by David Balzer as “desperately and romantically seeking success with no real clue as to what that might be, mean or require?” She is boy-crazy and drinks a lot but is also vulnerable neurotic and adorable.
