Born in Johannesburg South Africa.

Peter Hsu was a Toronto cartoonist who, emulating Dave Sim, had organized Quadrant Publications and launched Quadrant as a vehicle for his creation “Hellrazor”. Peter must have wanted to add diversity to his magazine as Mel and Rick’s story was quite unlike the rest of magazine. Rick’s wife speculated that his students’ parents would not be happy if they knew their children’s teacher was being published in a raunchy magazine.

About the same time, he was producing Peter Hse’s Quadrant, he became involved with American black & white entrepreneur Steve Milo. In this connection he illustrated the first issue of The Adventures, both cover and content and recommended Ron Kasman for the lettering. Probably due to the pressures of Quadrant he reduced his commitment in The Adventurers to illustrating covers and probably recommended Kent Burles to do the contents. See BURLES Kent.

Late in 1986, Dave’s collaboration with Ron Hobbs and the mystery man idea behind the “Scavenger” was revived again. Peter Hsu wanted to expand his company’s magazine line and since Dave had established himself with Wordsmith, Peter approached him to come up with a concept for a new comic book series. Dave saw it as an opportunity to reconnect with Ron.

Dave and Ron worked on it for the next year. Then another set back. With the black and white comics market crumbling Peter Hsu had to cut back his operations leaving the project without a publisher. Hobbs pressed on and finished illustrating the story and painting the cover. Hsu, for his part, completed the origin story for the villainess Madame Joy which was a flashback episode within “The Snake”. Dave had contracted him for this episode in order to introduce a different style of drawing.

Hsu moved to Victoria British Columbia sometime in 1988.
