Edmond Good a self portrait? Dime Comics, 1-9: Inside Front cover.

Born July 1, 1910 in Saco Maine U.S.A., he came to Canada at age 10 years when his Canadian parents returned to settle in Hamilton Ontario. He attended the Hamilton Art School where he trained as a commercial artist. He married Audrey Harrison in 1936 and had two children Aledra and Barton. With a family and one would think an established career in commercial art he joined Bell Features and created “Rex Baxter”, a “Flash Gordon” type character for Dime Comics,1, Feb. 1942. Or did he work as a freelancer? One might think this unusual but both Ed Furness and Std Stein followed the same pattern and Good like Furness and Stein would move back and forth between the two occupations. Another interesting parallel exists between Good’s wife and Dingle’s wife, both of these women also contributed stories to Bell Feature magazines.

Good became Bell Feature’s principal cover artist. These included: Active Comics, 11&13; Commando Comics, 1-6; Dime Comic, 1-13;, and WOW Comics, 8-13. As well as covers for Bell Features, In addition, Good did covers for Canadian pulp magazines like Thrilling Detective Stories and a Canadian reprint version of Weird Tales which also emerged during the war years.

Late 1943, early 1944 Good left Canada to work in the U.S. To find out about that aspect of his career go to Ivan Kocamarek’s excellent article listed below.
