DEREK OF BRAS d’ Or

DEREK OF BRAS d’ OR

This short lived feature, was created by writer Glen Guest and illustrator A.L. Alexander for Triumph Adventure Comics when published by Hillborough Studios. It did not transfer to the Bell Features Triumph, and Guest and Alexander also vanish from the graphic magazine industry.

Derek MacGregor is a young east coast fisherman. In his first adventure, he joins a crew to go Sword fishing. They encounter a German submarine and notify a RCN corvette while Derek disables the submarine’s periscope with a rifle shot. The corvette destroys the sub with depth charges and the fishing crew rescue the German sailors.

In the second story Derek is just home from his submarine adventures when he encounters a bank robbery in which he fights the bank robbers. It is clear that the story was to continue but it did not.

The character is based on Angus Macaskill, “The Giant of Cape Breton”. He was 7 feet tall and weighed about 500 pounds. He lived near St Ann’s Bay in Victoria county.
