AWARD DOUG WRIGHT

DOUG WRIGHT AWARDS

The Doug Wright Awards, were founded in May 2005 to recognize the accomplishments of cartoonists and graphic writers and illustrators working in Canada. They were named after Doug Wright the cartoonist of the strip “Nipper” in the Weekend Magazine followed by Doug Wright’s Family in the Canadian Magazine and the pane variously name “Ticktacky Township” or “Max and Mini”.

These awards are given annually in conjunction with the Toronto Cartoon Arts Festival.

They are broken into three subsections. The “Best Book Award” is the award for an outstanding work. “The Best Emerging Talent Award”, which in 2012 was renamed “The Spotlight” or “The Nipper Award” is awarded to artists deserving wider recognition. It is named after the Doug Wright character on the same name who is a child just starting out in life.

The “Pigskin Peters Award” was introduced in 2008, and is awarded to avant-garde and other non-traditional works. It is named after “Pigskin Peters” a character in Jimmie Frise’ half tab cartoon feature “Birdseye Centre” which appeared in the Toronto Star Weekly beginning in the 1920’s.

“Giants of the North” is a separate category acknowledging cartoonists with singularly accomplished careers.
