I don’t care about the details in the drawing. I think the most important thing is to give a strong idea and rapidly. The readers of a newspaper are always in a hurry.”                                                                                                                                 The Hecklers, 188.

Born 1931 in Algeria, where he studied art at l’Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts for five years. In 1956 he was hired as a political caricaturist at the Journal d,Alge. He found that there one had to support the editorial line. Cartoons critical of de Gaulle were often rejected.

In 1961, he moved to the U.S.A. where he worked as an editorial cartoonist and illustrator for the Star [Minneapolis]. Unhappy in the U.S.A. he moved to Paris France. Visiting Montréal in 1964, he decided to stay and had secured a job before his visit was over. He worked for the Métro Express until it ceased operations.

“At first it wasn’t easy. He found the Canadian scene rather confusing, not always knowing the difference between federal and provincial politics. Eventually he turned this to his advantage, as he could stand back and approach all subjects in an equally cynical and teasing manner.” [237]

After the Métro he freelanced for Le Petit Journal, Le Maclean, and Perspectives. He joined La Presse [Montréal] as editorial cartoonist after Roland Berthiaume (Berthio) left. He sometimes produced as many as a dozen cartoons a week for the paper. He often used a dog called “Chien” to make secondary comments in his cartoons.

He discovered that in the Québec of the 1960’s, pressure to conform politically came not only from editors and newspaper owners but from other journalists as well. During the 1970 October Crisis, his opposition to kidnapping and violence placed him in opposition to many other journalists and intellectuals. [189]

In 1985, he was named to the Order of Canada and he won the Grand Prix at Le Salon International de la Caricature?/ The International Salon of Cartoons in Montreal.
